The açaí berry or açaí, is a small, round, drupe with about a 1 inch circumference. It shares both its appearance and wine-like color with the grape.
Açaí is native to the countries of Brazil, Peru, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Açaí palms are tall, slender trees that often grow to be more than 82 feet tall, these palms flourish in swamps and floodplains. The palm bears fruit year round but the berry cannot be harvested during the rainy season.
The word açaí comes from the Portuguese adaptation of the Tupian word ïwaca'I a word that means fruit that cries or expels water. The Tupian are indigenous peoples of South America for whom the açaí fruit has long been an important food source.
